About BloomTrellis
BloomTrellis started in a backyard, not a boardroom. In 2019, our founder, Marisol Ferreira, was elbow-deep in compost trying to figure out which raised garden bed wouldn't warp after one Ohio winter. She read a dozen review sites, bought three different beds based on their advice, and watched two of them sag by August. That frustration became the seed of BloomTrellis: a garden and outdoor review site built by people who actually use the tools, soil amendments, mowers, and patio furniture they write about — not just people who read spec sheets.
Our Founding Story
Marisol had spent a decade managing community garden plots and working part-time at a regional nursery before she started BloomTrellis as a small blog documenting her own trial-and-error. Early posts were things like 'I tested five hose nozzles so you don't have to' and 'Why my $40 pruning shears beat the $120 pair.' Readers responded because the reviews were honest, sometimes unflattering, and always specific about how a product performed in real conditions — not showroom conditions. As the audience grew, Marisol brought in a small team of gardeners, landscapers, and outdoor-living enthusiasts who shared the same allergy to marketing fluff. Today that team spans zone 3 to zone 10 climates, so we can speak honestly about how products actually behave whether you're battling clay soil in the Midwest or sandy heat in Arizona.
Who's Behind the Reviews
Our current contributors include a former landscape architect, a master gardener with over 20 years of hands-on plot management, a small-scale hobby farmer who tests outdoor power equipment on real acreage, and a patio-and-outdoor-living writer who has furnished and re-furnished her own deck more times than she'll admit. Every reviewer on BloomTrellis gardens, mows, waters, or builds outdoors themselves — this isn't a team of generalist writers assigned random topics. We assign products to whoever has the right soil, climate, or skill set to test them properly.
How We Choose and Test Products
We don't review everything that lands in our inbox, and we don't rank products based on affiliate commission size. Here's what actually happens before a review goes live:
- Category research first. Before testing individual products, we research the category — what makes a good compost tumbler, what separates a durable hose from a cheap one, what safety features matter in a chainsaw — so our criteria are grounded in real horticultural and mechanical knowledge, not marketing copy.
- Hands-on testing whenever possible. We purchase most products ourselves at retail price. When manufacturers send review units, we disclose it clearly, and free product never buys a favorable review — several brands have learned this the hard way after we published critical reviews of items they sent us.
- Real-world conditions, not lab conditions. We test raised beds through actual seasons, run mowers on real lawns with slopes and roots, and leave patio furniture outside through rain and UV exposure rather than judging it in a showroom.
- Comparative testing. Where possible, we test multiple competing products side by side under the same conditions so our rankings reflect genuine differences in performance, not isolated impressions.
- Ongoing re-evaluation. Outdoor products change with new model years, and our own opinions change as products age. We revisit and update reviews rather than letting outdated verdicts sit indefinitely.
What Makes BloomTrellis Trustworthy
We know 'trust us' means little on its own, so here's what we actually do to earn it:
- We clearly disclose affiliate relationships and any free products or press samples we receive.
- We publish negative and mixed reviews when products underperform, even when that means turning down free products or damaging a relationship with a brand.
- Our writers use real names and real gardening or landscaping backgrounds, listed on our team page — no anonymous 'staff writer' bylines hiding inexperience.
- We link to our actual testing notes and methodology on in-depth reviews so readers can see how we reached our conclusions, not just what the conclusion was.
- We correct mistakes publicly. If a product's performance changes, or if we got something wrong, we update the article and note the change rather than quietly editing it away.
Our Promise to You
Gardening and outdoor living should feel rewarding, not like a minefield of overhyped products and buried disappointments. Whether you're choosing your first pair of pruners, replacing a mower that finally gave out, or building a patio setup from scratch, we want BloomTrellis to be the resource we wish existed back when Marisol was standing in her yard wondering why her raised bed was falling apart. We test things. We tell you the truth about them. That's the whole model.
